{"id":2124,"date":"2021-09-02T17:36:35","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T21:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifescivoice.com\/?p=2124"},"modified":"2021-09-03T02:04:14","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T06:04:14","slug":"pfizer-and-flynn-pharma-face-charges-in-uk-for-unfair-price-hike-of-epilepsy-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifescivoice.com\/pfizer-and-flynn-pharma-face-charges-in-uk-for-unfair-price-hike-of-epilepsy-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"Pfizer and Flynn Pharma face charges in UK for unfair price hike of epilepsy drug"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.K.\u2019s competition watchdog claimed that Pfizer and Flynn Pharma Ltd. might have violated antitrust rules, as the two companies charged \u201cunfairly high prices\u201d for their <a href=\"https:\/\/lifescivoice.com\/\">epileptic seizures therapy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had preliminarily considered that the two companies \u201cexploited a loophole by de-branding the drug known as Epanutin prior to September 2012,\u201d such that its price couldn\u2019t be regulated like other branded drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This provisional decision by the CMA came after the 2020 directive given by the U.K. Court of Appeal which said that the authority\u2019s investigation, which it did earlier, was \u201cinsufficiently deep or intense.\u201d&nbsp; According to CMA, the re-investigation of the case started in June 2020 after court\u2019s ruling, the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chief executive officer of CMA stated, \u201dThousands of patients depend on this drug to prevent life-threatening seizures as a result of their epilepsy\u2026 This is a matter that is important for the government, for the public as patients and taxpayers, and for the<a href=\"https:\/\/lifescivoice.com\/\"> pharmaceutical industry<\/a> itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, Pfizer was fined 84.2 million pound and Flynn 5.2 million pounds by the U.K. watchdog, for as much as 2600% rise in prices of the unbranded versions of anti-epilepsy drug, in September, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the adoption of final decision, Pfizer seems to have a possibility to respond to the CMA\u2019s statement of objections. It said that it \u201ccontinues to co-operate fully with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lifescivoice.com\/\">CMA\u2019s ongoing investigation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company, in an emailed statement, said, \u201cEnsuring a sustainable supply of our products to U.K. patients is of paramount importance to Pfizer and Flynn Pharma was at the heart of our decision to divest the product in 2012.\u201d\u00a0 However, no spokesperson from the other company responded to the request to express their stance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.K.\u2019s competition watchdog claimed that Pfizer and Flynn Pharma Ltd. might have violated antitrust rules, as the two companies charged \u201cunfairly high prices\u201d for their epileptic seizures therapy.
